I have just been looking at a web page I was referred to for a blogging product and it looked terrible in my Firefox browser. I switched to IE and it was fine so I had a look at the source code of the page.

The reason for the problem immediately became apparent when I saw the code that said the page was generated with Microsoft Frontpage. I ran the page through the World Wide Web page validator and it had 320 coding errors! So why is Frontpage a problem?

As an inveterate user of Twitter (you can follow me @RicRaftis), I am constantly looking at the websites of the people I am considering for following.

I find it amazing that such go ahead professionals such as those on Twitter can have such poor websites. Obviously this is not true in all cases, but several I have seen recently really don't promote the professional image that a business needs to convey as the first port of call for people considering establishing relationships or doing business.

Previously with the Joomla! CMS, it was necessary to go through the process of downloading the latest version and manually going through an upgreade process by loading all the new files to your site.

Fortunately, Joomla! often brings out new versions which have tweaks, but more importantly security fixes where any are identified that need doing.

The old process of updating is no longer required with a brillian extension called Joomla Updater. It is installed as a component on your site and when accessed tells you which version of Joomla you are running and what the latest version is. If you are not up to date, you simply click the update button and your site is automagically updated to the latest version.

This extension saves much time for web developers and webmasters and even allows clients to easily update their own sites instead of paying for it to be done.

It's a funny thing, but many people in business seem to think that their 15 year old nephew has the ability to develop a professional web site for them. Whilst this may be true in some rare cases, in the majority it is not and the reason for this is that there is far more to developing a business web site than may meet the eye.

It's not only what is visible on the page to the visitor, but the code behind the scenes that drives the page that is important.

A business web page is like an unpaid employee and great consideration must be given to its content so that your business is represented in the most professional manner. Your web page should be designed to make you money, not just provide you with a presence online.
